  • $6.9 million has been allocated this financial year for the new infrastructure.
  • Installing flashing school zone signs leads to a 45 per cent decrease in the number of motorists exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 km/h.

As Queensland Road Safety Week draws to a close, the Crisafulli Government has announced Flashing School Zone Signs are being rolled out across more than 100 high-risk school zones, including one in the Rockhampton electorate.

Almost $7 million has been allocated this financial year to install and maintain the signs across the State, which are proven to reduce speeding and enhance safety for children travelling to and from school.

Rockhampton Girls Grammar will receive new Flashing School Zone Signs.

Last year, 12,384 infringement notices were issued across Queensland for motorists speeding in 40km/h school zones.

Tragically, more than 63 school aged children in Queensland were injured in 2024 as a result of a crashes in school zones, with around 30 of those casualties hospitalised.

The selected school zones were identified based on a comprehensive assessment of crash history, pedestrian activity, traffic volume, speed limits, visibility concerns, and feedback from school communities.

Research shows flashing school zone signs lead to a 45 per cent reduction in the number of motorists exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 km/h, significantly improving driver behaviour during school hours.

Minister for Transport and Main Road Brent Mickelberg said the Crisafulli Government was committed to ensuring all children have a safe journey to and from school.

“Children are one of our most vulnerable road users and we will continue to implement road safety measures to improve safety around schools,” he said.

“The upgraded signs compliment a raft of measures being delivered by the Crisafulli Government to improve road safety, including the parliamentary inquiry into e-mobility use, more speeding enforcement measures, and $25.5 billion being invested in Queensland’s road network alone over the next four years.

“This is about delivering programs, initiatives and projects that help protect lives on our roads.”

Education Minister John Paul Langbroek said driver awareness in school zones was paramount to helping save lives.

“Every child deserves to feel safe on their way to and from school. These flashing signs are a simple but powerful reminder to drivers to slow down and stay alert,” Mr Langbroek said.

“We’re listening to school communities and acting on their concerns to make school zones safer across Queensland.”

Donna Kirkland MP, Member for Rockhampton, said the flashing school zone signs serve as a clear and timely reminder for motorists to slow down where it matters most.

“Across our region, parents and school staff consistently raise concerns about driver behaviour near school zones and it is great to hear that flashing school zone signs will be installed in Denham Street to assist the students, families and staff of Rockhampton Girls Grammar School.” Kirkland said.

“And this initiative isn’t just about installing flashing signs – it’s about listening to our community and responding to what they’ve told us.

“The Crisafulli Government is committed to delivering meaningful safety upgrades that protect our children every day.”

Kara Krehlik, Principal of Rockhampton Girls Grammar School said the school is thrilled to see the flashing school zone signs delivered by the Crisafulli Government.

“Denham Street is an extremely high-traffic area during school zone hours, and the installation of these signs will significantly enhance safety and visibility – not just for our students, but for staff and families as well.

“As our school continues to grow, so does the need for stronger safety measures, and these signs are a welcome addition to our community.” Said Principal Krehlik.
